Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

by Lyn Lapworth

How it all began In October 2020 a friend of mine made a comment about how she thought being eco-friendly was expensive. This was a real light bulb moment – there and then, I knew I had to do something to prove otherwise. I had 2 young children and as a family...

What a week! It feels like everyday there's been What a week!

It feels like everyday there's been BIG news - and while we're regularly exposed to all the awful events that are happening, not so much of the good stuff is shared.

So here's a little positivity to end your week.

⛽️ The UK Government has declared they will not grant any more new oil and gas licences. Our commitment to achieving Net Zero has taken a huge step forward

🏞 Yesterday saw the first ever National Emergency briefing on the Climate and Nature Crisis held in London.
Leading climate scientists, MPs, health leaders, people from agricultural organisations, NGO's, leaders from the utilities sector - and many more - all came together to forge a science based pathway for our future security. @nebriefing

💷 The Climate Change Committee gave us a boost by sharing that once we've achieved Net Zero, the UK will save a massive £37bn per year

🌳 I've also been processing the fall out from COP30 which ended last week. 2 weeks of talks from the majority of countries across the world, all sharing their commitment to the goal of 1.5 degrees warming.
We know that a handful of countries refused to sign a deal that mentioned the transition away from fossil fuels, however 113 countries have submitted their commitments to reduce global warming - and combined, they represent 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions

♻️ The economy could be give another boost by recycling more plastic in the UK. Building up to 15 new recycling facilities by the end of the decade could produce 5400 jobs and attract £800m of private investment. In turn, this would generate close £900m in economic value every year

🇩🇪 Germany has joined Brazil, Indonesia and Norway in pledging significant amounts to the Tropical Forest Forever Facility - a commitment of €5bn

I constantly ask myself why we don't hear more good news.

Don't you think it's needed?

You work hard for your money. Why part with it so You work hard for your money.

Why part with it so easily?

Some simple rules to help you avoid spending unnecessarily ahead of Black Friday:

❓️Write yourself a list of things you genuinely NEED and stick to it

❗️Don't rush to buy immediately, Black Friday sales don't disappear overnight. Sleeping on it can help you reassess whether you genuinely do 'need' to buy

♻️You may save more money buying preloved or reconditioned instead

⁉️Remember who is responsible for all the sorting out and decluttering around your home. Is it worth it?

💆‍♀️Could you spend the money on something more memorable instead?

An actual quote from one of my lovely clients- "L An actual quote from one of my lovely clients-

"Lyn doesn't preach, or expect you to knit your own yogurt"

It really made me giggle, but it also highlights perfectly the confusion of how to buy yogurt in a better way... 🤔

As a nation, we love our yogurt, however it's really difficult to find 'plastic free' options.

Yes, yogurt is something we could make at home (not knitted 😅) however I hear it's tricky - and not many of us have the time and/or headspace anyway!

So what to do?

▶️ My first piece of advice would be to buy the biggest pot you can get through before it goes over.

This 950g tub of Fagè is the biggest I've been able to find. Once you're finished you then have a couple of options - ideally find ways to reuse the pot. A tub of this size, with a lid is great for storage, so I have some saved to collect various items in for recycling in (pens, batteries etc) that aren't collected kerbside.

▶️ Alternatively, you can obviously recycle- and with bigger tubs, at least they'll be smaller quantities to be recycled.

Alternatively, some yogurt brands are more switched on than others with their packaging. @timsdairyyogurt have done away with the plastic lid and made the cardboard wrap really easy to remove. Very smart and a simple change that will be having a big impact.

▶️ However, if your budget stretches, there are always glass options.

If you use Milk and More, they sell a brand called @browncoworganics in glass jars - and better still, take the jars back to be cleaned and reused. As we know, reuse always trumps recycled!

So whatever your budget, there is a better option.

Sometimes an hour just isn't long enough. This mo Sometimes an hour just isn't long enough.

This morning I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the utterly fabulous Kate Hall of the @thefullfreezer

We met briefly at the @homelifeandyou show last month (thank you for the intro Kat Lord @more_to_organising) and immediately realised we were in tune with each others message.

What was particularly lovely, was how relaxed and informal this mornings chat felt - however after several deviations of topic 😅 we realised our passion for making sustainability as accessible and affordable as possible was very much aligned.

Kate is on a mission to help you reduce food waste by maximising the use of something found in most households - the undervalued freezer - which not only helps to save money, but she also brings organisation to busy households.

And I got to hear about some big plans! Kate is finalising a tool that will be of real benefit to every single homeowner - which I will be sharing as soon as it's ready to go, so watch this space.

When the average household wastes over £1000 worth of food each year, why wouldn't you make this a priority?

I highly recommend giving Kate a follow on Instagram for some easy to implement tips.

This morning was just what I needed! Fresh air, b This morning was just what I needed!

Fresh air, bright sunshine, gorgeous surroundings and fab company.

It's times like this that remind you just how vital getting outdoors is for our mental health.

The temptation to tuck ourselves away when the temperature drops is real, but this is the most important time to blow away the cobwebs.

So this morning I dug out my old ski gear, wrapped up and headed out for a walk.

And I feel so much better for it! My legs ache a little, my face knows it's been out in the cold and my head has cleared after a very busy week.

Appreciating the benefits of being outdoors is key to looking after our natural world.

So a small tip for your Friday - when the temperatures hit freezing overnight, please remember the wildlife and small creatures in your garden that need water. Popping a small dish of water water outside could make all the difference to them.
How has it been a month already?? Last month, I w How has it been a month already??

Last month, I was back at the fabulous @homelifeandyou show talking about my passion.

It is my mission to change the narrative around how easy it is to live more sustainably.

We know the climate crisis is a huge overwhelming issue, but we also know that taking action helps to ease eco-anxiety.

By introducing simple changes to everyday habits, we can all do our bit. And in the act of making changes, our confidence grows as we know we're making a difference.

When our confidence grows, we then look to make the next change, then the next.

And before we realise, all those small changes have made quite an impact.

Then ultimately, we find our entire mindset has changed.

Taking those first steps is where I come in.

Learning how much of an impact you can make by changing everyday habits, finding out which brands you can really trust AND how to identify them, and becoming aware of how much we can benefit our health through the removal of harmful toxins in our home - all create a feeling of empowerment.

I offer services to help:

🌍 individuals looking to make changes around the home

🌍 businesses with employee wellbeing teams, where I can help ease eco-anxiety and improve your company's eco credentials

🌍 event organisers looking for speakers on topics around Sustainable Living - saving money, reducing toxins, reducing waste (and many more)

DM me to book a free introductory chat.

And if you know of someone this applies to, please pass on my details.

Today has been a 'so tired I could fall asleep st Today has been a
'so tired I could fall asleep standing up'
kinda day.

One of those days where I couldn't be bothered to put on as much make up as usual and should probably have washed my hair but didn't.

The weekend was a good kind of busy. Spending the day with good friends on Saturday and a FULL ON day Sunday at my business coaches event - where I took on a lot of information and felt a variety of different emotions.

So today, I'm feeling it. I could easily have fone back to bed once the kids were safely off to school.

I've just been kind to myself instead as I knew I'd be processing a lot from the coaching day.

I headed out for a walk, I had a little tidy round the house (it's amazing how much mess you come back to after only 1 day away!) and didn't give myself a hard time for only booking 1 call this afternoon. (turned out to be a particularly fab call too 😃)

We're too quick to give ourselves a hard time because we're not doing 'all the things'
There's so much pressure to be the 'perfect' wife/mum/daughter/sister/friend

Sometimes we just need a little help.
And know that's OK.

So ahead of Black Friday AND Christmas, let me help you tick a few jobs off the list.

Let me show you where to source more meaningful gifts. all be more conscious of our choices.

According to @finder_com_uk

🎁 3 in 5 Brits (58%) received an unwanted gift at Christmas, which is around 31 million adults.

🎁The total spend on unwanted gifts at Christmas is estimated to be £1.27 billion. The average value of unwanted gifts received per person was £41.

🎁The most common unwanted gifts are soap, bath bombs and moisturisers.

So if you'd like to know the money you're spending goes on gifts that will be appreciated, join me for my Sustainable Gift shopping session-
BE QUICK, IT'S TOMORROW!

Tuesday 18th November at 8pm

You are worth the £36 investment to buy yourself some time and headspace.
WHAT A DAY! Yesterday was a day full of hugs, lau WHAT A DAY!

Yesterday was a day full of hugs, laughter, a few tears, some turtle talk (IYKYK) but most importantly, yet more breakthroughs.

It was a day spent with a room full of incredible women ready to show up for themselves and shake off those limiting beliefs.

The Queen of High Vibes herself @dawnowencoach was on top form, delivering ways of tweaking our mindset and taking those all important steps forward towards our future self.

This was 6th time at one of Dawn's events and each time there's something new to take away.

One thing is for sure, 2026 is set to be my best year yet!
We all had our opinions on Katy Perry's trip to sp We all had our opinions on Katy Perry's trip to space earlier this year.

Should she have gone? Were you envious? Disgusted? Embarrassed for her? Or just not particularly interested?

That 11 minute flight cost her in excess of £115,000.

And its estimated the building the New Shephard rocket cost Blue Origin upwards of $700 million.

And who owns Blue Origin?
The world's 3rd richest man, Jeff Bezos.

We obviously know Jeff Bezos best for being the part owner of Amazon - a company I'm not exactly a fan of.

In 2024 alone, Amazon made

$59.248 billion

Think about that for a second.

Globally, we've become so addicted to the convenience of the 1 stop shop, next day delivery service that feeds our need for the dopamine hit we get from buying something new.

So much so, it's funded the creation of a rocket built purely to satisfy the egos of the super rich.

That's where your money goes.
And on his extravagant wedding celebrations in Venice that cost in excess of $20 million.

Amazon customers paid for that too.

We could instead be supporting local independent businesses on our street that are probably struggling to pay the bills. Or we could be spending our hard on cash with businesses that donate a percentage of their profits to charity.

That feeling of spending your money with a business that genuinely appreciates it far outweighs the short lived dopamine hit from an impulse buy.

If this resonates, but you're not sure which brands you can trust, or where to start, I'm here to help.

This coming Tuesday evening (18th Nov) at 8pm I'm hosting my online Sustainable Gift shopping session.

Its full of inspiration on how to buy better, where you can save money and will ultimately save you time and headspace as you'll be able to tick so many Gift ideas off your list.

I've popped the link in my bio, or scan the QR code (swipe left) so you can snap up your seat.

The investment is £36.
A question for you... How often to you stop and c A question for you...

How often to you stop and consider where your purchases have come from?

Who made them? What conditions they work in?

What are the morals of the businesses you spend your hard earned money with?

Last week, Shein was due to open it's first physical store in Paris within a department store called BHV. However, due to the poor ethics of Shein, other brands within BHV have threatened to leave. Its been revealed that amongst all the other horrors of Shein, they now sell child-like sex dolls on their platform.

It's well documented that the other Chinese giant, Temu, have similarly poor ethics. A documentary called the Truth about Temu exposed practices such as selling climbing equipment with faked safety certificates and weapons without checking the age first.

Are these really the sort of companies we want to spend our money with - to line the pockets of the super rich owners that don't care who we are and will never appreciate our business?

Spending your money closer to home has so many benefits.

Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent shop means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. This is simply because the nearby shop owners, who you are spending your money with, will then put that money back into your local community by going into local pubs and restaurants etc, circulating the money and allowing your community to thrive.

I've always found customer service to be so much better in small local businesses and small online businesses too. They genuinely appreciate every sale so are keen to make sure tou have a positive experience and use them again.

With online purchases from small UK companies, I've even found they pop a handwritten thank you note in with the package.

Being a little more consciously about who we spend with can also be better for the environment.

Next Tuesday evening (18th November) at 8pm, I'll be hosting my online Sustainable Gift shopping session where I'll introduce you to many ways of buying better in the run up to Christmas.

I'll even support you after the session with my unique personal eco shopper service - scan the QR code to book your seat. For £36.
Leave them be. That's it. That's all you need to Leave them be.

That's it.

That's all you need to do.

🍁 Those fallen leaves create a natural habitat for a variety of small creatures, including insects, spiders, and occasionally amphibians. These little critters use the leaves for shelter and protection from the cold.

🍁 Decomposing leaves are also a vital food source for many important organisms. They break down into rich organic matter, providing nutrients for soil-dwelling creatures, improving biodiversity in the process.

🍁A layer of leaves acts as a natural blanket, insulating the soil and plant roots from extreme temperature fluctuations. This helps protect plants and provides a warmer environment for hibernating animals.

🍁 Birds often forage through leaf litter to find insects and seeds. By leaving leaves on the ground, you’re creating a natural buffet for our feathered friends during the winter months.

🍁 As leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with organic matter, improving its structure and fertility. This leads to healthier plants and a more vibrant garden come spring.

So PLEASE dont go raking them up to put in a plastic bin bag!

The best options are:
🦔 Leave It Be: In less manicured areas of your garden, simply let the leaves lie where they fall.
🦔 Create Leaf Piles: For drives or pathways, gather the leaves into piles to create specific habitats for wildlife.
🦔 Mulch: Use shredded leaves as mulch around garden beds to provide the benefits of leaf litter while keeping your garden tidy.
