Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

by Lyn Lapworth

How it all began In October 2020 a friend of mine made a comment about how she thought being eco-friendly was expensive. This was a real light bulb moment – there and then, I knew I had to do something to prove otherwise. I had 2 young children and as a family...

Cats have it pretty sorted, don't they? They slee Cats have it pretty sorted, don't they?

They sleep when they feel like it, are fed when they're hungry, play when they want to and pretty much do whatever they feel at any given time.

This photo is my 2 girls resting in the shade this week. They're really living their best life!

When I think about how simple their life is, I quite often feel pretty envious. Do I sleep, explore, play, wash or eat? That's the sum total of their choices.

As humans, we've created a lifestyle full of work, stress, FOMO, mental health issues, wanting to be everywhere and do everything.

And the result? We're never fully living in the moment.

This is where the concept of Slow Living came from.

Slow living is simply about presence.

It’s choosing to be where you are, while you’re there.

Not rushing through your days. Not constantly thinking about what’s next. Not living in a permanent state of “catching up.”

It doesn’t mean doing everything slowly.

It means doing what matters with awareness and intention.

It's the perfect partner for a more natural and sustainable way of living.

If you'd like to explore idea this further, @shehnaaz_latif and I would love for you to join us at our Slow Living day retreat on 19th July.

You're invited to take some time away from day to day life, for a few hours of being present.

Please see the link in my bio for details of the stunning venue and to book your slice of heaven.

I haven't opened my curtains for a week! As soon I haven't opened my curtains for a week!

As soon as there's an imminent heatwave, the curtains stay closed, particularly on the sunny side of our house, as it really helps in keeping out the heat.

So at 4am this morning when I woke - and struggled to get back to sleep, it wasn't due to the heat. It was due to eco anxiety.

I'm pretty good at following all the good news (there is a LOT when you know where to look) however every once in a while, something crops up that knocks me sideways.

And the recent predictions of a super El Nino phase starting later this year has me seriously worried.

El Nino is a periodic natural climate phenomenon that appears roughly every two to seven years. It's caused by warmer-than-average sea surface temperature occurring in parts of the Pacific Ocean, which then influences the climate globally.

The US Climate Prediction Centre, along with the UK's Met Office, have predicted that this year's event may be one of the strongest versions of El Nino in recorded history.

So what does this mean for the UK?

Previous El Nino events have coincided with some of the warmest years on record, with intensifying heatwaves, flooding events and storms. Storm Babet – which caused significant flooding across the UK – coincided with the 2023 El Nino.

If you're struggling in the current heat, I strongly recommend you take whatever action you can to improve insulation around your home.

And if you're a sun worshipper and are sat there thinking 'bring it on' - remember - we don't suddenly get to press pause on global warming. We don't get to decide it's got hot enough, so can we stop now please?

Next year could see more frequent power cuts, longer droughts, more widespread wildfires and more frequent days at 40 degrees resulting in many more heat related deaths.

Over the next few months I'll be doing everything I can to prepare our home for the future.

If you want advice on how to prepare and what you can do to take action, please message me directly.

Be more leopard! The weekend was definitely a tim Be more leopard!

The weekend was definitely a time for slowing down.

Between the heat and the fact we were all really ready to kick back, we've made the most of the long weekend.

Saturday was about mooching around at home, getting a few jobs done and keeping cool as much as possible.

Sunday we took a leisurely walk through a wood to the local pub and enjoyed a long lunch under a parasol.

And Monday was family time - card games, conversation and an hour at a local fête.

And today (Tuesday) we had one of the usual half term appointments and stocked up the cupboards while we were out.

Then home to do something I almost never do - relax in the hammock, without feeling guilty!

But I think the thing I've enjoyed the most, is barely looking at my phone. Switching off from social media, from the news and from screen time in general has been really restorative.

The point of slow living is reconnecting with the simple pleasures in life.

If you're intrigued to learn more, you're invited to join @shehnaaz_latif and myself for our Slow Living day retreat on 19th July.

Time to check out from the rest of the world for a few precious hours of peace.

The details are in my bio - and there's only a few days left at the early bird rate. Last date for the reduced price is 30th May.

Why wouldn't you?

Nearly there!! We've made it to the Bank Holiday Nearly there!!

We've made it to the Bank Holiday weekend.

And for those with school aged children, we've made it to half term.

This week has been a week of exams for my daughter, and as we head towards the end of the academic year, both my children are really ready for the break.

As a mum/business owner, I am often managing my energy so I'm there for my kids when they need the extra support, but also making sure I give enough to my business.
Let's face it, as a business owner we never really switch off do we?

As much as I love the summer, I'm very aware the next few weeks will be about making sure we all get enough rest.

So I'm seriously excited at the prospect of cohosting my Slow Living retreat with the wonderful @shehnaaz_latif on 19th July.

It's perfect timing as the schools will have finished for the summer, so it's the ideal opportunity to take some time out before the juggle of having kids at home vs keeping on top of running the business.

Ladies, we can't pour from an empty cup, so I am inviting you to join myself and Shehnaaz Latif for a few hours of peace.

No questions, no interruptions, no demands.

Just relaxation, mindfulness and engaging with nature.

Away from it all.

Ask yourself, when was the last time you felt fully rested? This day is designed to leave you floating on air.

The link is in the bio and if you book before 30th May, you'll also benefit from the early bird price.

Today is #worldbeeday, so here's why we should car Today is #worldbeeday, so here's why we should care - and simple ways we can help...

Bees are pollinators - we know that - but did you know they, along with other pollinators, are responsible for pollinating 1/3 of the food we eat?

Did you know that a whopping 90% of wild flowering plants are also dependant on pollination?

We have 270 species of bee in the UK and we need to care for every single one if them. Our bee populations are in rapid decline due to loss of habitat, widespread pesticide use and climate change affecting the flowers they rely on for food.

So here's 3 simple ways you can help them-

🐝 Plant nectar rich flowers, such as heathers, lavender, dahlias and bluebells - in your garden or a window box if you don't have a garden

🐝 Provide nesting sites such as bee hotels made from bound together sticks of bamboo

🐝 Make sure you provide water for them. They need to drink too - and with the next few days looking hot, this will be vital for them. Find an old dish, fill with water and add stones to it so the bees have somewhere safe to land. And keep checking if it needs topping up. 👌

There's also a fabulous company called Beevive Ltd who sell a tonic for struggling bees, so if you find one that's not looking in great shape, this will bee a life saver.

You are allowed to have fun in the name of work! You are allowed to have fun in the name of work!

And yesterday wasn't just fun, it was empowering, inspiring and it filled my heart.

I spent a few hours in the company of our @athenawarks network tribe - 103 women to be precise. Most were members, some ladies were just curious about what they've been missing.

103 women! All quietly going about making the world a better place. All out to support each other. All more powerful than they realise.

I simply would not be without them.

Our leader @iamhollynixon somehow manages to create the most fabulous atmosphere - these rooms have a buzz of excitement. It's a chance to strengthen relationships and build new ones.

Thank you Holly - you've created something very special.
Friday was huge. It involved evolving, inspiring, Friday was huge.

It involved evolving, inspiring, making new connections, chocolate planets and chit chat.

I spent the day at Time to Evolve, hosted by the fabulous Andrea Lennard @purepegasuscoaching - not just as an attendee but as a speaker and exhibitor too.

The room was full of business owners ready to learn about healing old wounds and stepping up to be the best version of themselves.

Andrea had carefully selected exhibitors to compliment the theme of the day - evolving in to the people we're meant to be.

I spoke about looking after our health by focusing on our immediate environment.

Jane Brook @houseofcolourworcester and Suzy Finnegan @getyourglowwithsuzyfinnegan shared why looking after our appearance isn't about vanity, but about confidence and feeling comfortable in our own skin.

And there were speakers on numerology, aloe Vera and a fascinating talk from @kelly_reclaimyou of Reclaim You, who introduced us to an entirely new way we can look after ourselves.

I will probably be remembered as the lady who gave out chocolate planets though. A huge thank you to the super talented Victoria Thurkettle of @rawsomechocolateuk who's handmade bespoke vegan chocolates were a huge hit!

Then Friday evening was a whole other new experience - attending PechaKucha @pkleamingtonspa . If you don't know about it, PechaKucha is a worldwide phenomenon where speakers are given 20 slides with a 20 second time limit per slide, in which to share their story and their expertise.

And I had 3 friends on the line up, so couldn't miss it! Keira Smith @rewiretothrive Clare Spiers @griefspecialist_clare and Tina Römer @spiritgate_acupuncture absolutely smashed it!
A massive congratulations to @katiejones_design for an incredible event. It was a full house. And Mario Barba @barbacreative is a natural born compere.

Needless to say Saturday was a day for resting. 😅
Can someone please tell me what season it is?? Th Can someone please tell me what season it is??

This afternoon I headed out to meet gorgeous friend - and the very first client to complete my RAMP program, @laurengregory_pt

We were meeting for a walk and a catch up - and I had no idea whether to go with raincoat, sunglasses, SPF or what!!!?

Somehow, we managed to complete our walk AND have a drink outside without getting soaked.

Just as we finished our chat and we're saying our goodbyes, the hail started.

I'm sure within the space of half an hour we had rain, then sun, then hail and black skies, then blue sky and sun again.

I'm currently feeling very British with all this talk of weather. 😅🫣

We learned something valuable a few years ago that We learned something valuable a few years ago that many of us seem to have forgotten.

The positive impact spending time in nature has on our mental health.

So for #mentalhealthawareness week, I thought I'd remind why we were encouraged to get out for walks over Lockdown.

It wasn't just for physical exercise, it was to support our mental health at a really difficult time.

But we seem to have slipped back in to being busy all the time, and not making time to look after our wellbeing.

I know that whenever I'm struggling with overwhelm, the first thing I do is head out for a walk. And I usually litter pick along the way to boost that feeling of doing something positive.

Any time we spend outdoors can help to reduce stress, boost our mood and restore a sense of calm. I also find it's when I have my most creative ideas.

The theme of this year's mental health awareness week is 'take action' so what action can you take to improve your me talk health?

🫶 Checking in with someone else is a powerful reminder most people have something they're dealing with at any given time
🫶 do something constructive, like go for a litter pick or plant some bee friendly flowers. These bring a real feel good factor
🫶 but above all else, be kind to yourself. We all have moments when we're not feeling at our best, so don't give yourself such a hard time for not always being 'on top form' We're all guilty of it, but it's human nature.

Kindness is more important than ever. So this week of all weeks, let's spread a little kindness wherever we go.

#wellbeing #kindness #mentalhealth
Have you noticed? Changes are happening... If yo Have you noticed?

Changes are happening...

If you've been out over the weekend, you may have noticed our roadside verges are full of colour.

Thanks to many councils embracing #nomowmay you'll be blessed with the uplifting variety of wildflowers decorating the countryside.

And I'm here for it!

Not just for the fabulous colours, but for what it brings. Our pollinators.

Butterflies, ladybirds and all manner of bee species are appearing. And that's a very good thing.

Have you noticed an abundance of flowers near you?

If you're rushing around, you may have missed them, so I'm encouraging you to slow down as you're missing a treat.

Noticing the beauty of nature is something we need more of in our lives. Appreciating how complex and remarkable it is only comes when we allow ourselves the time to really stop and notice.

So I'm inviting you to stop and explore for our glorious Slow Living day retreat.

You will be given time to slow down and headspace to really think about how nature supports our wellbeing (away from all the demands)

The date for your diary is 19th July.
Shehnaaz Latif and I will take care of you for the day.

Please see the details in my bio.
And if you book before the end of May, you'll benefit from the early bird price.

My voice is hoarse, my cheeks ache from smiling an My voice is hoarse, my cheeks ache from smiling and I'm topped on hugs...

It can only mean I've spent the day surrounded by fabulous friends and inspiring women at the @womanwhouk awards hosted by champion of business women @sandragarlickmbe

We were treated to fabulous speakers on subjects from sales and scaling to wellness.

I got to spend the day with many of my @athenawarks tribe AND we celebrated the fabulous Donna Wilson @focusfinanci3ls winning the very first award of the day!

Definitely a day to celebrate.
Now I'm going to lie down in a quiet room for a few hours. 😅
Tomorrow is a HUGE day. Not only will I be attend Tomorrow is a HUGE day.

Not only will I be attending the @womanwhouk Who awards organised by local legend @sandragarlickmbe but 8th May is important for another reason.

The 8th May 2026 is his Highness Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday.

He is, quite simply, a living legend. I can't think of any 1 person that has carried such influence and is so highly respected as Sir David.

And rightly so.

He has 100 years of life experience. He has been to places we've never heard of, introduced us to creatures we'd never come across and experienced things we will never get to try.

And he's seen changes too. Some good, most not so good.

From the start of his career in the 1950's to the present, he's witnessed changes, such as how plastic waste has impacted wildlife, he's seen animals impacted by droughts, wildfires and floods and he's constantly reminded us, that we all have a responsibility to protect this planet and all living things that survive here.

And who are we to argue?

We can all make a few simple changes to the way we go about our lives.

We can all make more conscious decisions when it comes to our purchases.

We can all stop and think about our own impact - and the legacy we'll be leaving.

We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to the next generations.

We all have an impact on the Earth every single day and we should choose wisely what we can do to reduce it.

In his words

“If working apart we are a force powerful to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it…in my lifetime I’ve witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery.”

If more of us work together - what is the worst that can happen?
Cleaner air and water. A healthier environment. Fewer endangered species.

Sounds good to me.
