Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

by Lyn Lapworth

How it all began In October 2020 a friend of mine made a comment about how she thought being eco-friendly was expensive. This was a real light bulb moment – there and then, I knew I had to do something to prove otherwise. I had 2 young children and as a family...

Would you rather spend £6 or £200? I know, a no b Would you rather spend £6 or £200?

I know, a no brainier isn't it?

What if I was to tell you that if you'd choose £6 instead of £200 you'd be making the more 'eco-friendly' decision?

Last weekend, I hired a strimmer from my new local @library.of.things

If you haven't heard of them, they're pretty much as they sound. They have all manner of gadgets and objects you can hire, use and return when you're done.

Anything from strimmers and metal detectors to projectors and carpet cleaners - simply check where your nearest Library is, set up an account and you're away!

Rather than spending a small fortune on a gadget you may only use a handful of times, then it just sits and collects dust the rest of the time, you get to save money and space - and tick the eco-friendly box as you're being less consumerist.

And they're run by fairly fabulous people too.

Check out libraryofthings.co.uk for your nearest service.

Saving money while helping the planet?? Who knew!

Yesterday was a day where every woman wore her hea Yesterday was a day where every woman wore her heart on her sleeve.

This years @sociallyshared conference was an emotional rollercoaster!

The first speaker of the day was a real powerhouse. Gulshen Bano @strikebackdefence is the genuine definition of a woman on a mission - a huge inspiration. She has created a global movement, creating spaces for women and girls to learn how to keep themselves safe. And she has collected the backing of a Dragon along the way having made a successful appearance on Dragons Den. What a way to start.

We were then reminded of how life has a habit of throwing challenges our way - and how, through navigating the very worst of times, we can look after our needs while supporting others. Thank you for sharing your story Heather Wolfe.

@iamkristinemonaghan shared her vast experience in building hugely successful companies.

@emmahewittawards Hetal Trevedi and @dayleadams all gave invaluable tips on how to build our confidence in very different ways.

And we didn't stop there. Pamela Carpenter encouraged us to use both sides of our brain and last but by no means least, the very lovely 😉 @dawnowencoach taught us how we need to lean in to all of our identities.

@heapkaren - only you could pull a day like this together. It was a sheer celebration of women.

And showed there's so much strength in showing your vulnerable side.

WHAT A DAY.

Phew. My head is full. There is a LOT going on b Phew.

My head is full.

There is a LOT going on behind the scenes at the moment. I've recently made 2 big investments in the business, which is incredibly exciting but also a lot!

More about the 2nd investment another time, but today was Day 1 of Speaking with Authority - a 2 day event combining the skills of 3 fabulous women.

It's a unique combination of skills.

We started off learning techniques to warm up and prepare our vocal chords with RSC actor Rachel Winters @r_winters2025

Keira Smith @rewiretothrive spoke about how best to prepare for public speaking by getting our brains onside and the importance of sleep the night before delivering a talk.

And finally the inimitable Wendy Garcarz @wendygarcarzconsulting gave us many pearls of wisdom about how to structure our talks with a view to maximising the audience experience.

And now the work begins!

It's time to put everything in to practice. I have 10 days in which to prepare an 8 minute talk, ready to deliver at day 2 of this course.

Then, we will benefit from more of Rachel Winters expertise on stage presence, really hone the skills on keeping our nerves in check with Keira and have master speaker Wendy to help refine our words.

So much to learn and such a unique experience.
I'm going to sleep well tonight!

How can it be a year already?? This Friday, I'll How can it be a year already??

This Friday, I'll be attending this year's @sociallyshared Socially Womens Business Network conference. And I cannot wait.

Having attended for the first time last year - as a speaker, I know first hand just how powerful this day is.

Last year's conference was a day I will never forget... the honour of appearing on stage in the Purpose Collective, alongside the wonderful @sangodley and Mandy Bygrave of @cw_cda - obviously meant my imposter syndrome reared it's ugly head.

But hearing them talk about their purpose, then benefiting from the endless knowledge of so many inspiring women, including the legendary @wendygarcarzconsulting the wonderful Lisa Cressy @super__being and rounding off the day having the fire put in my belly by marketing queen Rowena Wilding @wildingmarketing - led to us all leaving energised, empowered and uplifted.

I can still remember that feeling now.
The power and energy created in that room is something I'll never forget.

Will you be there this Year? Just L👀K at that speaker line up!!
You're in for a treat!

WOW. 4 days on from posting this and it's really WOW.

4 days on from posting this and it's really gained some attention!

I simply posted a few stats about how unsustainable our appetite is for plastic (intentional choice of wording) and some of the progress that's being made in our fight to reduce this toxin.

If you've ever caught yourself thinking "what's the point in taking action, what difference can I make? "

...maybe the fact this post has so far had -

Today is World Environment day, so the perfect opp Today is World Environment day, so the perfect opportunity to remind you why looking after it should be a priority.

Why should it matter to you?

🌱 Clean air and water reduces disease, yet we're systematically polluting our air and water through use of chemicals, plastics and all manner of toxins that ultimately will damage our health

🌍 Climate change isn’t a distant threat; it’s here. Rising temperatures, extreme weather, pollution and biodiversity loss are impacting our world. Its impact will affect your food supply, your house insurance, where is safe to go on holiday and potentially whether your house becomes too hot to even sleep in.

The choices we all make today determine the state of the planet we leave for the next generation.

There is good news though.
Progress is being made.

➡️  Europe Reaches a Clean Energy Tipping Point - for the first time, wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union.
In 2025, wind and solar produced 30% of the EU’s electricity, overtaking coal, oil, and gas at 29%. Experts are calling this a major energy “tipping point” — not just symbolically, but structurally. It signals that renewables are no longer an alternative, but rather they are becoming the backbone of Europe’s energy system.

➡️ Earlier this year the High Seas Treaty came in to force.
It's a landmark international agreement to protect ocean life beyond national borders has officially come into force.
This legally binding treaty covers the high seas, which are vast areas beyond national waters that make up over two-thirds of the ocean’s surface and more than 90% of Earth’s living space by volume.
For the first time, there is a framework to create protected areas and regulate human activity in these shared waters. It’s a massive step toward restoring and protecting our oceans.

THIS is what it takes. 👆🏻 EVERY. SINGLE. TIME For THIS is what it takes. 👆🏻
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME

For every single item that's ever been made from plastic, this is what has had to happen first.

Last year alone, approximately 500 million tonnes of plastic was manufactured - which far exceeds any capacity we have to recycle and reuse it.

In fact in the 100+ years since it was invented, only 9% of all plastic created has been recycled. And only 5% is recycled more than once.

Some uncomfortable stats:

❗Production of plastic has grown by an average of 4% annually since 2000*

❗ Plastic production is responsible for around 5% of global CO2 emissions*

❗ There are estimated to be almost 100 million tonnes of microplastics in the ocean*

❗ We're each breathing in 6g microplastics every single week

*from worldmetrics.org

However, there is good news.

✅ Over 60 countries have now introduced bans on plastic bags

✅ India alone has introduced bans on 20 different plastic products

✅ In the UK WRAP is working with our 9 main supermarkets to work out how to implement reusable packing systems. The aim is to start introducing this in the next 5 years.

So what can we do in the meantime?

We can really lean in to our consumer power. Companies closely monitor what we're buying. In simple terms, if we don't buy plastic products, they won't sell them.

But while society isn't set up for avoiding it completely and we're all busy juggling 100 things at a time, we don't necessarily have the capacity for researching alternatives of every single plastic item in our homes.

Which is why I've created my Send Plastic Packing webinar.

It's a 1 hour online session where I'll take you through simple swaps, share where you'll find plastic in unexpected places and you'll leave with a list of trusted companies from which to buy alternatives.

All for just £44.

When it's your families health on the line, it's worth this small investment.

The link to book is in the Bio.

Have you seen the news? Later this year, a super Have you seen the news?

Later this year, a super El Nino is highly likely to bring the most extreme weather events we have seen in 150 years.

The last super El Nino of the size we're predicted to see was in 1877.

Between 50 to 60 million people lost their lives worldwide. At the time, that was 3% of the global population.

Whether we like it or not, the impacts of human activity have created unstable and unpredictable conditions.

And it's up to us to reduce our impact wherever we can, so that our younger generation don't have increasingly volatile weather conditions to contend with.

Improving insulation in your home for the upcoming cold winter will also help when we experience more extreme heat next Spring and Summer.

Adding water butts around your garden to collect rain will help to reduce excess water in your garden and give you a short term water supply in case of droughts (remember last year...?!)

It's time to get prepared.
It's also time to step up in taking action by reducing our impact.

We created this situation and we can put the brakes on it too. But we need to do everything we can, as quickly as we can.

It's simply a matter of life or death.
Your time is precious. Yet instead of spending we Your time is precious.

Yet instead of spending weekends with the family, making memories, you're busy doing the housework and heading to a busy supermarket to buy the food for the next week.

So you rush around with your shopping list, grab everything you need as quickly as you can so you can head home to unpack and just maybe put your feet up with a cup of tea.

The thought of being more selective about what you buy doesn't enter your head. You're too busy and actually would just like a little bit of time to relax.

So again, you find your shopping bags are full of plastic packaging. The good intention to buy less plastic packed goods has gone out of the window for another week.

And you feel a pang of guilt.

But it's not made easy for us!
The supermarkets are full of plastic so how are we supposed to make changes? (there is work being done on this, but it will take time)

Imagine how you'd feel having it all made a lot easier?

Relief? Less guilt?
How about more confident in how to avoid this material that is not only harmful to the environment and to our wildlife, it's harmful to our health too?

All those plastic products in your home are creating microplastics - so much so, it's in the air you're breathing in.

Making better choices also sends a powerful message to the supermarkets too - our buying habits are monitored, so if we opt for plastic free options, that's what they'll supply more of.

And there are better choices to be made all throughout your home too.

My Send Plastic Packing webinar is designed to share where plastic is lurking, what you can do about it and how to find trusted businesses that supply plastic free options.

You'll even come away with a handout giving you something to keep referring back to.

So save July 1st at 7.30pm and book your seat ASAP (head to Bio to book...)
A recording is available if you're already booked up as this is too good to miss!

Cats have it pretty sorted, don't they? They slee Cats have it pretty sorted, don't they?

They sleep when they feel like it, are fed when they're hungry, play when they want to and pretty much do whatever they feel at any given time.

This photo is my 2 girls resting in the shade this week. They're really living their best life!

When I think about how simple their life is, I quite often feel pretty envious. Do I sleep, explore, play, wash or eat? That's the sum total of their choices.

As humans, we've created a lifestyle full of work, stress, FOMO, mental health issues, wanting to be everywhere and do everything.

And the result? We're never fully living in the moment.

This is where the concept of Slow Living came from.

Slow living is simply about presence.

It’s choosing to be where you are, while you’re there.

Not rushing through your days. Not constantly thinking about what’s next. Not living in a permanent state of “catching up.”

It doesn’t mean doing everything slowly.

It means doing what matters with awareness and intention.

It's the perfect partner for a more natural and sustainable way of living.

If you'd like to explore idea this further, @shehnaaz_latif and I would love for you to join us at our Slow Living day retreat on 19th July.

You're invited to take some time away from day to day life, for a few hours of being present.

Please see the link in my bio for details of the stunning venue and to book your slice of heaven.

I haven't opened my curtains for a week! As soon I haven't opened my curtains for a week!

As soon as there's an imminent heatwave, the curtains stay closed, particularly on the sunny side of our house, as it really helps in keeping out the heat.

So at 4am this morning when I woke - and struggled to get back to sleep, it wasn't due to the heat. It was due to eco anxiety.

I'm pretty good at following all the good news (there is a LOT when you know where to look) however every once in a while, something crops up that knocks me sideways.

And the recent predictions of a super El Nino phase starting later this year has me seriously worried.

El Nino is a periodic natural climate phenomenon that appears roughly every two to seven years. It's caused by warmer-than-average sea surface temperature occurring in parts of the Pacific Ocean, which then influences the climate globally.

The US Climate Prediction Centre, along with the UK's Met Office, have predicted that this year's event may be one of the strongest versions of El Nino in recorded history.

So what does this mean for the UK?

Previous El Nino events have coincided with some of the warmest years on record, with intensifying heatwaves, flooding events and storms. Storm Babet – which caused significant flooding across the UK – coincided with the 2023 El Nino.

If you're struggling in the current heat, I strongly recommend you take whatever action you can to improve insulation around your home.

And if you're a sun worshipper and are sat there thinking 'bring it on' - remember - we don't suddenly get to press pause on global warming. We don't get to decide it's got hot enough, so can we stop now please?

Next year could see more frequent power cuts, longer droughts, more widespread wildfires and more frequent days at 40 degrees resulting in many more heat related deaths.

Over the next few months I'll be doing everything I can to prepare our home for the future.

If you want advice on how to prepare and what you can do to take action, please message me directly.
