Why being Eco-friendly is more affordable than you think

by Lyn Lapworth

How it all began In October 2020 a friend of mine made a comment about how she thought being eco-friendly was expensive. This was a real light bulb moment – there and then, I knew I had to do something to prove otherwise. I had 2 young children and as a family...

Tomorrow is a HUGE day. Not only will I be attend Tomorrow is a HUGE day.

Not only will I be attending the @womanwhouk Who awards organised by local legend @sandragarlickmbe but 8th May is important for another reason.

The 8th May 2026 is his Highness Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday.

He is, quite simply, a living legend. I can't think of any 1 person that has carried such influence and is so highly respected as Sir David.

And rightly so.

He has 100 years of life experience. He has been to places we've never heard of, introduced us to creatures we'd never come across and experienced things we will never get to try.

And he's seen changes too. Some good, most not so good.

From the start of his career in the 1950's to the present, he's witnessed changes, such as how plastic waste has impacted wildlife, he's seen animals impacted by droughts, wildfires and floods and he's constantly reminded us, that we all have a responsibility to protect this planet and all living things that survive here.

And who are we to argue?

We can all make a few simple changes to the way we go about our lives.

We can all make more conscious decisions when it comes to our purchases.

We can all stop and think about our own impact - and the legacy we'll be leaving.

We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to the next generations.

We all have an impact on the Earth every single day and we should choose wisely what we can do to reduce it.

In his words

“If working apart we are a force powerful to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it…in my lifetime I’ve witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery.”

If more of us work together - what is the worst that can happen?
Cleaner air and water. A healthier environment. Fewer endangered species.

Sounds good to me.

Let's dive straight in... We know plastic is the Let's dive straight in...

We know plastic is the bad guy.
But we're not sure exactly why it's so bad.

We know it harms ocean wildlife.
But we don't know just how big the problem is, or what we can do about it.

It's too big a problem right??

However, there are many, many reasons why we should try.

Here's 3 to get you started-

1. plastic is an oil based product - anything you can do to reduce plastic in your life, will simultaneously reduce your carbon footprint. Double win.

2. the more plastic you have in your home, the higher the rate of microplastics you're exposing yourself to. We're currently breathing in 6g microplastics every single week. So it's not just a problem for the wildlife anymore. It's a problem for you and your family.

3. Consumer power works. The sooner we change our buying habits, the quicker our supermarkets will take action - and I'm talking much more than just 'buying lose fruit and veg' - though that's a good start.

On 1st July at 10am I'm hosting my 'Send Plastic Packing' webinar.

It's designed to inform you of many many simple changes you can make around the home to reduce the various types of plastic.

I'll also be sharing some of the products you may be using, without realising they contain plastic.

You'll leave with a greater understanding of what you can do to make a difference, to your own health, as well as the health of our environment.

This is too good to miss!
Excuse me for stating the obvious, but it's the la Excuse me for stating the obvious, but it's the last day of April!!

How the fudge did that happen?

After January felt like 183 days long, the last couple of months have whizzed by.

As a mum of school kids we've had the Easter holidays, which somehow felt like it was a month long...but other than that it does feel like I've blinked and summer is nearly upon us.

I know I've been longing for the warmer days and brighter sunshine - which has finally arrived!

What I know from experience, is that May, June and July will fly by too - and before we know it, the school holidays will be upon us.

Now I'm not wishing time away - I'm working on so many exciting things behind the scenes, but with end of term activities like sports day, already in the calendar, the summer holidays are in the back of my mind.

Before then, I have events galore, a shiny new 1 off session I'll be sharing more about next week - and as a final flourish - I'll be co-hosting a glorious Slow Living retreat with my fabulous friend @shehnaaz_latif.

What's really exciting, is the fact the date for our retreat is Sunday 19th July. For those of us with school aged children, holidays generally mean a juggle of keeping the kids happy, ferrying them to spend time with friends and somehow keeping the business going.

While the children feel like summer holidays last forever, it is not exactly a relaxing time for us mum's.

So ladies, this is the perfect opportunity for you to step away, for our few very precious hours. To join us in celebrating nature and all it has to offer. We've carefully selected a venue that's away from the noise of the nearest road, in a woodland setting - and the first thing that hits you when you arrive is the peace.

If you're yearning for some tranquility, for some calm before the storm, please check out the link in my Bio for details - and join us for a day that will leave you floating on air.
How do you support nature and do your bit for our How do you support nature and do your bit for our food chain, all whilst doing less?

The answer is simple - don't mow your lawn.

We're fast approaching #nomowmay - when we're encouraged to not mow for a whole month (or longer ideally - June is 'Let it Bloom June')

So why should you save yourself a job and hang up your lawnmower for a few weeks?

There are over 23 million gardens in the UK, so even the smallest grassy patches can add up to a significant proportion of our land which will deliver enormous benefits for nature and our wildlife.

In particular - our pollinators will be able to enjoy a feast. Pollinators are essential to the food chain because they help plants reproduce.

Without pollinators, many plants would be unable to produce seeds, which would devastate the food chain. Our pollinators are responsible for the reproduction of over 75% of the world’s flowering plants, including many food crops.

Protecting pollinators and acting before it is too late is essential and it can all start with not mowing your lawn.

If you're sat there thinking - I'm not willing to leave my entire garden to go wild for weeks you can still get imvolved -

🌻 simply leave strategic areas to grow, such as borders or corners of your garden
OR
🌻 create meadow flower 'corridors'

Once you have encouraged these creatures to your garden - please remember to leave water out in prolonged dry spells. 💦

Create a bee bath by leaving out a dish of water with stones in, creating a safe plans for bees to land while they drink.

Something huge happened yesterday. And I don't me Something huge happened yesterday.

And I don't mean Earth day.

I don't even mean me presenting a webinar for the @fsb_uk on the topic of Small changes, Big impact, for 60 fabulous business owners.

I mean the web browser @ecosia hit a whopping 250 million trees planted.

The Amazon has an estimated 390 million trees, so this gives you an idea of the sheer scale of reforestation they've contributed to.

Over the last 17 years, the Ecosia mission has seen them work with local community groups at locations across the planet, in order to restore
vital biodiversity.

They currently work with a network of 125 organisations, involving 200,000 tree planters, supporting livelihoods, local knowledge and long
term forest stewardship.

These reforestation projects have created new habitat for chimpanzee, orangutans, lemurs to name but a few.

And these trees aren't planted and left to fend for themselves like many carbon offesetting schemes, Ecosia work with Tree Teams and local partners to monitor these trees, ensure they grow to full maturing and are able to capture vast amounts of CO2.

Better still, Ecosia invests money in to climate action - 100 million euros to date.

Their next target is 1 billion trees - so let's do what we can to help them.

You can add Ecosia as an extension within Google Chrome.

It takes 5 seconds of your time.

Why not join in with something that has an enormous ripple effect?

And a real feelgood factor!

The possibilities are endless. The topics I could The possibilities are endless.

The topics I could talk about for #earthday have been buzzing around in my head.

And then this morning, while hosting a webinar for the @fsb_uk in honour of Earth day - I was asked what 1 thing I could recommend to small businesses that would have a big impact.

On the spot, I made a couple of suggestions around digital hygiene - regular deleting of files, videos and photos we no longer need - due to the demand data centres place on our energy and water systems.

But I've been mulling over what else I could have suggested. And I came up with something really important that we can all do.

Start conversations.

I don't mean start preaching. I simply mean volunteer the steps you've already taken in order to be more eco friendly. Look for those opportunities.

-this is preloved
-I use my reusable water bottle all the time
-did you know every email you send uses energy?

Whatever you feel you can share.

Why is this so important?

Because whenever you start to share the changes you've made, you'll find others start to do the same.

Then you're not feeling like 'it's just you' - you're left feeling encouraged, even inspired.

So who can you talk to?
Look out for those opportunities.

You'll be pleasantly surprised just how many of us are doing something to be a little more sustainable.

The tipping point is when we get to 25% of society behaving a certain way - the rest then feel inclined to follow suit.

Feel free to volunteer changes you've made in the comments to demonstrate my point ☺️🙏

You may not like this, but stay with me... I don' You may not like this, but stay with me...

I don't believe we pay enough money for our food.

I know this seems controversial in a time when many households are
struggling with their bills, however, we simply don't appreciate just
how much effort goes in to growing the food we eat.

From preparing the soil, sowing seeds, spraying with pesticides
(unpleasant though but this still incurs a cost), relying on the perfect
weather conditions (which is more unreliable than ever), to harvesting,
transportation, packing and then transporting again to your supermarket
of choice. That is a huge amount of time and effort.

Alternatively, our fresh produce is grown in huge greenhouses which
require vast amounts of heating and water - worth bearing in mind when
you're buying 'British grown' strawberries in the middle of winter.

In the 1970's British households were paying between 10-15% of their
income on food. Today, it's just over 5%.

So what happens as a result? We don't place enough value on our food so
a lot is wasted.

In the UK alone, we waste around 9.5 million tonnes of food each year -
70% of this is household waste. This equates to £470 worth per household
every year.

Then factor in that our food waste is responsible for around 25 million
tonnes of CO2 equivalent emmisions annually in the UK, largely due to
methane released when waste decomposes in landfill. Methane is a more
potent greenhouse gas than CO2 - so reducing our food waste not only
saves us money, it reduces our carbon footprint.

So what can you do?

You could meal plan - if you have the time. If you don't, the single easiest tip to reduce food waste is to have a 'throw it all in' meal at the end of the week. Anything to use up those veggies that may be about to go over. This could be something like soup, curry, stir fry, homemade pasta sauce or bubble and squeak.

Or, it's possible to freeze much more of your food than you realise.

I highly recommend following the work of Kate Hall @thefullfreezer who shows us what we
can prep and freeze for later.

Next time you sit down to eat, think about just how much time and effort went in to providing everything on your plate.

So next week is the big one. Wednesday 22nd April So next week is the big one.

Wednesday 22nd April is the 56th World Earth day.

While every day should be #worldearthday - it is a day specificallydesigned to bring people together to take action for our planet, in some way, shape or form.

For many, this seems like an overwhelming thought. Where to start? How to identify trusted brands? How do I even recycle something properly??

In honour of World Earth day, I am excited to be presenting 'Small Action, Big Impact - Sustainable Changes for Small Businesses' for the @fsb_uk

This webinar is designed to share just how many simple actions we can all be taking in our businesses. With it being a particularly difficult
time to be running a small business, sustainability is not always at the forefront of our minds.

So I'll be running through ways we can set up our working environment in a more sustainable way, showing where there is money to be saved and why we need to be so mindful of our digital footprint - and what we can do about it.

When did you last just STOP? Downed tools, no tec When did you last just STOP?

Downed tools, no tech - you just sat and checked in with how you were
feeling?

Why not try it right now?

You don't have to close your eyes - but feel where the tension is in your body. Be aware of any heavy thoughts you're holding on to and the weight of expectation you place on yourself.

April is #stressawarenessmonth

Stress impacts all of us at some point in our lives - influencing our physical health, mental wellbeing, our relationships and our ability to cope with the ups and downs of daily life. Learning to recognise when we feel stress levels becoming unmanageable is of vital importance.

Then the next step is figuring out what helps us reduce our level of
stress so we can reinstate our resilience.

1 method of reducing stress is much more simple than you think - getting outdoors. Quite simply, nature heals.

In fact Doctors are now prescribing time in nature to help us relax. Researchers have found that spending even short amounts of time walking
through woodland can significantly reduced cortisol levels (our main stress hormone), lowered our blood pressure, stabilises our heart rate
and improved feelings of calm.

The UK now recognises nature as an official health intervention and in Scotland, doctors working under NHS Shetland can prescribe walks on the
beach, bird-watching, or time spent observing clouds as part of treatment for mental health, heart conditions, and chronic stress.

So when it came to selecting a venue for our Slow Living retreat, @shehnaaz_latif and I knew a woodland setting was essential. We've
created an experience that immerses you in nature and encourages you to seek out all that nature has to offer - which extends from mental health support to physical health benefits through replacing toxins in your home with ingredients from the natural world.

Our retreat is being held at the @roundhousehaven just outside of Market Harborough, on 25th April.

If you've just realised you're carrying more stress than is good for you, then a few hours away from all the demands is just what the doctor ordered.

The link containing all the details is in my Bio.

Please share with anyone who may benefit. 🙏
Just what I needed! Last week I had a few days aw Just what I needed!

Last week I had a few days away with the family to beautiful Cornwall.

The coast is rugged and full of fabulous walks. There are many quieter beaches (probably due to the time of year) and lots of wonderful places to eat.

We were also lucky enough to head out on a boat trip on that gloriously sunny Wednesday, spotting a couple of curious seals and several secret caves.

And most of our time was spent outside exploring. The time spent outdoors, blowing away the cobwebs was just what the doctor ordered.

The views, the sun and breeze, being in nature - all served to nourish the soul.

To top it off, I finally made it to the Eden project, somewhere that had been on my to-do list for such a long time. It didn't disappoint and we'll definitely be going back again soon.

On the way home, it struck me how I was feeling the most relaxed I'd felt in a long time.

Time away in nature does that for you.
